Automotive parts: US exports from US, by country
Mexico, Canada and China are the three highest-ranked markets for automotive parts exports from the US, although for significantly different reasons. In 2024, total automotive parts exported from the US to the world dropped 0.2% from 2023, to US$93.5 billion. That follows a 13% increase from 2022. Scroll down to see export data tables.
Those three countries are also the three highest for auto parts imports into the US. Follow this link for statistics on automotive parts imports.

US exports to China: automotive parts
For OEM as well as aftermarket automotive parts, China ranks in the top 5 for exports of auto parts from the US. This is because China has a very high level of vehicle production as a base. China was projected to manufacture over 27 million vehicles in 2023, including commercial and private vehicles.
China produced an average of nearly 18 million vehicles per year from 2012 to 2014, and in 2015 produced as many as 24 million vehicles according to Investopedia. This puts China ahead of the US, the world’s second-largest vehicle manufacturer.
This level of vehicle production is more than twice as large as Japan, which produced just over 8 million vehicles per year from 2012 to 2014.
This high level of vehicle manufacturing is why China is the third largest export market for U.S. automotive parts. US auto part exports to China grew from $1.5 billion in 2011 to over $3.2 billion in 2020, an increase of 113%. The peak year for US automotive parts exports to China was 2018, reaching $3.6 billion.
US exports to Canada: automotive parts
Canada is usually the third largest US export market for OE and aftermarket automotive parts, after Mexico. This is despite the fact they produce fewer vehicles than China. Canada produced about 1.5 million vehicles in 2023, and 1.2 million in 2022.. Canada averaged about 1 million vehicles per year between 2012 and 2014.
US exports to Canada has historically been one of the largest foreign markets for US automotive parts, accounting for about a third of all US auto parts exports in the past decade.
This is partially because the automotive industry and automotive supply chains are highly integrated between Canada and the United States (in addition to Mexico). Cross-border shipping is much easier and than with countries that require crossing an ocean.
What percent of US exports go to Canada?
In 2024, 32% of US exports of auto parts went to Canada.
Is the USMCA still in force with Canada?
Trade between Canada and the United States was facilitated by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which was in effect from January 1, 1994 until July 1, 2020. It was replaced with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which was ratified in March 2020 and took effect on July 1, 2020. Tracking the changing tariffs is difficult, but as of April 2025, USMCA-compliant goods still have a 0% tariff, non-USMCA compliant goods have a 25% tariff, and non-USMCA compliant energy and potash have a 10% tariff.
US exports to Mexico: automotive parts
Mexico is usually the largest US export market for OE and aftermarket automotive parts, ahead of Canada. This is even though they produce fewer vehicles than China. Mexico produces about 3.5 million vehicles per year. Mexico historically been the largest foreign market for US automotive parts exports, accounting for about 40% of all US auto parts exports in the past decade.
Mexico is such a large US export market for automotive parts because the automotive industry and automotive supply chains are highly integrated between Mexico and the United States (as well as Canada). A major reason for this is because cross-border shipping is faster and easier than it is for countries requiring overseas shipping.

Exports of auto parts from the United States
In 2024 US exports of automotive parts was over $93 billion. 2024 was down 0.2% from 2023. In 2023, US exports of automotive parts to the world was up 13.2%. The top five countries receiving US exports of OEM and aftermarket auto parts are Canada, Mexico, Australia, Germany and China. Here is a table showing the top 23 countries that are export partners to the US, plus Russia, and US exports to the entire world, for 2011-2024. The table includes both OEM and aftermarket auto parts and can be sorted and searched. All dollar amounts in this article are FAS (Free Alongside Ship) value. This is the value of goods at the US port of exit, before they go on a ship, truck or train to another country.

The role of tier two and tier three automotive suppliers in US exports to other countries
Tier one companies are direct suppliers to OEMs. These suppliers, in turn, get parts and sub components from tier two and tier three companies. It is similar for aftermarket parts suppliers, but with some differences. A common aftermarket replacement part, such as a transmission or suspension part, may be the exact same part, built by the same OEM manufacturer/supplier. Specialty components and accessories, purchased by consumers to customize or enhance their vehicle, tend to come from non-tier one manufacturers.
The Federal International Trade Administration has ranked the top counties by their openness to trade for automotive aftermarket parts. Among the top 20 counties that receive auto parts exports from the US, the counties most open to trade are Hong Kong, Singapore, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates. Countries least open to trade with the US are Brazil, China, Mexico, Russia and Thailand.
